The World Health Organization (WHO) Country Representative to Nigeria, Dr. Walter Kazadi Mulombo, raised concerns about the jeopardy facing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) due to economic crises, climate change, emergencies, and the global economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. He highlighted that only 17 percent of the SDG healthcare targets are on track, emphasizing the urgency to accelerate actions to achieve the SDGs and Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
During a training session for journalists in Abuja, Mulombo stressed the need for Nigeria to focus on implementing large-scale, quality healthcare solutions beyond pilot projects. He pointed out the risks posed to the SDG targets, such as universal health care, zero hunger, zero poverty, and clean energy, urging for a whole-of-government approach to address healthcare challenges.
Mulombo called on the media to counter misinformation and disinformation, collaborate with healthcare experts, and report responsibly to provide reliable information to the public. He emphasized the importance of vaccination as a human right and encouraged journalists to maintain ethical and evidence-based reporting amidst global challenges.
As WHO reaffirms its support for Nigerian journalists, Mulombo commended their resilience and urged them to play a critical role in Nigeria’s journey to address healthcare challenges and achieve the SDGs.
