The Dáil is set to vote on the final report of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying next week, with Tánaiste Micheál Martin confirming it will be a free vote for Fianna Fáil deputies. People Before Profit TD Gino Kenny is urging other political parties to adopt a similar approach.
The committee had recommended legalizing assisted dying in certain restricted circumstances, with nine out of 14 members backing the move. However, three members opposed it in a dissenting report. The final report was debated in the Dáil and will be voted on next Wednesday, although the vote will be indicative and not binding.
While Mr. Martin stated it will be a free vote for Fianna Fáil deputies, he expressed reservations about the proposed legislation. Archbishop Eamon Martin denounced the introduction of laws to allow assisted suicide, calling it an affront to a safe society.
