The US has imposed sanctions on the Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network Samidoun, labeling it a ‘sham charity’ and warning of legal action against those who engage with them. Samidoun, based in Vancouver and established in 2011 after an Israeli prison hunger strike, claims to be a global network backing Palestinian prisoners in their quest for freedom.
The US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) stated in a recent press release that this action aligns with Canada’s classification of the organization as a ‘terrorist entity.’ OFAC accuses Samidoun of fundraising for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a terrorist group according to the US. OFAC claims the PFLP created Samidoun to gather funds in Europe and North America.
Acting Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Bradley T. Smith emphasized the importance of disrupting those financing terrorist organizations. The US designated a Canadian member of the PFLP’s overseas leadership, freezing all assets and cautioning against any transactions with them.
Amid mounting scrutiny following pro-Palestine demonstrations in Canada, Samidoun faces increased pressure. Germany has also banned the organization as of 2023, as reported by Al Jazeera.
