Addressing Media Suppression in Gaza: UN Special Rapporteur Speaks Out

In a strong condemnation of Israel’s censorship and attacks on journalists, UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression, Irene Khan, highlighted the severe limitations faced by media personnel in Gaza and occupied Palestinian territories. She expressed concern over the increasing restrictions on journalists, the banning of Al-Jazeera, and the targeted killings of journalists.

Khan also raised alarm at the global implications of such censorship, warning that it sets a dangerous precedent for human rights standards. She criticized the discrimination and double standards faced by pro-Palestine demonstrations in European countries and called for accountability for violations occurring in Gaza.

She emphasized the need for the UN General Assembly and Security Council to take action to protect journalists and humanitarian workers in the region. Khan stressed the importance of upholding freedom of expression and academic freedom, urging for an end to the ongoing violence and oppression in Gaza.
