Climate change is a pressing issue that will have severe consequences for Europe and Central Asia, according to UN agencies. Ivana Zivkovic, UN assistant secretary-general, emphasized the rising global temperatures as a major challenge in the region, leading to increased risks of disasters like forest fires and droughts.
Speaking at an event in Istanbul, Zivkovic highlighted Türkiye’s crucial role in driving regional cooperation for climate action. She also stressed the importance of prioritizing gender equality in combating climate change, with a focus on women’s economic empowerment and their role in making more climate-focused decisions.
The UNDP is working to help countries in Europe and Central Asia meet their climate goals, particularly in preparing their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) ahead of the upcoming COP29 conference in Baku. This conference aims to assess progress in combating climate change and promoting a just transition to low-carbon economies with a focus on equity, gender inclusion, and support for vulnerable nations.
