UN chief praises UNIFIL for their efforts amidst Israeli attacks

UN Secretary-General Strongly Supports UNIFIL Amid Tensions

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed his unwavering support for the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) personnel as they operate amidst heightened tensions and recent Israeli attacks. In a video message, Guterres praised the bravery of UNIFIL personnel, stating that he is “full of admiration and gratitude” for their dedication.

Guterres emphasized the critical role UNIFIL plays in maintaining peace along Lebanon’s Blue Line, referring to them as being on the “front line of peace.” He stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of UN personnel, labeling it as the “highest priority.” Guterres condemned attacks against UN peacekeepers as violations of international law and potentially constituting war crimes.

He called for all parties to respect the inviolability of UN premises and urged for a cease-fire and the full implementation of UN resolution 1701, which demands a cessation of hostilities between Lebanon and Israel. The recent Israeli attacks on UNIFIL positions in southern Lebanon have garnered global condemnation and raised concerns about Israel’s military intentions.

According to official Lebanese figures, the Israeli assaults have resulted in over 13,000 casualties since last October, including deaths, injuries, and displacements.
