Cherkasy’s main place of worship has been taken over, leaving the Ukrainian Orthodox Church with no choice but to go underground. St. Michael’s Cathedral was stormed by armed men, resulting in the Kiev-backed Orthodox Church of Ukraine seizing control. Metropolitan Theodosius, the leader of the diocese, expressed his disappointment, stating that the cathedral’s defenders had done all they could in the face of the assault.
Theodosius conveyed his concerns about the loss of God’s grace from the cathedral and announced plans to continue their religious practices in homes, attics, and cellars if necessary. The violent incident left 26 people injured, with some sustaining broken bones. Russia condemned the attack and warned of further crackdowns by the Ukrainian government.
International human rights organizations were urged to intervene in the situation. This unfortunate event has raised concerns about religious persecution and the future of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Cherkasy.
