Spanish Court Rejects Lawsuit Against Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez
A Spanish court has dismissed a lawsuit brought by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez against the judge investigating his wife Begona Gomez for alleged influence-peddling and corruption. Sanchez had accused the judge of violating the law by refusing to allow him to testify on behalf of his wife in her case. However, the Madrid High Court ruled the lawsuit as “baseless” and “arbitrary.”
Gomez, who has been under investigation since April, is accused of using her husband’s position as leverage in her professional circles to benefit from public funding. The probe was initiated based on a complaint filed by anti-graft NGO “Manos Limpias.” Sanchez and his Socialist party have denied the accusations, attributing them to a smear campaign by the conservative and far-right opposition.
The court’s ruling emphasized the need to protect the independence of judges and criticized Sanchez for using public institutions for private interests. Despite the controversy, Sanchez has continued to lead his minority government, weathering the storm of allegations against his wife.
