Tanzania’s introduction of non-tariff barriers and hefty levies on milk exports have hindered Rwanda’s ability to market its products in the neighboring country. The dispute mirrors ongoing issues between Uganda and Kenya regarding the blockage of milk exports. As Tanzania continues to increase charges on imported milk, Rwandan traders face significant challenges in selling to the southern market.
The EAC Secretary-General highlighted the need to promote a unified trade bloc and address barriers to intra-EAC trade. Discussions also encompassed various sectors like air transport, manufacturing, tourism, and digital economy. The private sector emphasized the importance of addressing corruption and unfair charges within the trade network. Efforts to facilitate smoother trade processes and foster collaboration within the EAC were emphasized as essential for economic growth and regional stability.
