In a recent development in Kigali, nine individuals, including a woman and a prominent YouTuber, faced a bail hearing for charges that could result in 15 years of imprisonment. Arrested for allegedly sharing an encrypted version of “Blueprint for Revolution” by Serbian writer Srbja Popovic, which promotes nonviolent ways to overthrow a dictatorship, they are accused of spreading false information and inciting negativity towards the government. The trial was held behind closed doors, with family members and journalists being asked to leave. Despite opposition, the prosecution argued that they were a flight risk and opposed bail.
The YouTuber, Theoneste Nsengimana, known for his critical government commentary on Umubavu TV, requested a separate trial and awaits a decision. Rwanda has a history of targeting YouTubers and journalists for spreading rumors against the government. Human Rights Watch recently criticized Rwanda for alleged ill-treatment and torture of detainees, prompting a response from the government denying the accusations. As the case unfolds, the outcome remains uncertain for the accused individuals.
