Lagos urges Ogun River occupants to relocate

The Lagos State Government is advising residents living along the Ogun River banks to relocate to higher grounds as the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority (OORBDA) begins releasing water from the Oyan dam. The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized the importance of this water release for maintaining the sanctity of the dam and its socio-economic implications for Lagos State.

He reassured that the decisions on water release were based on real-time hydrological data, rainfall predictions, and flood outlooks to ensure flood control and dam integrity. Despite concerns from surrounding communities, protocols are in place to prevent structural damage and mitigate flood risks.

To address flooding challenges, OORBDA has initiated dredging of the Ogun River downstream and protection of right-of-ways. The Lagos State Government remains committed to collaborating with OORBDA to prevent flooding and safeguard vulnerable groups. Residents are urged to support these efforts by refraining from activities that impede the free flow of water.
