Kenyan deputy president impeached in historic move

Kenyan senators attend the impeachment motion on whether to remove Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from office, inside the Parliament buildings in Nairobi, Kenya October 17, 2024.

Kenya’s Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was impeached on multiple charges, leading to his removal from office in an unprecedented political event that captivated the nation.

After a day of high drama, Gachagua failed to defend himself in the Senate, ultimately losing his position. The historic impeachment marked the first time a deputy president was removed under Kenya’s revised constitution.

The impeachment stemmed from a rift between Gachagua and President William Ruto, escalating to a bitter falling out despite their previous political alliance.

Now ousted, Gachagua faces potential legal challenges following his removal, with Ruto having 14 days to select a new deputy to fill the vacant position.

‘Maintain peace’

Despite the upheaval, Gachagua called for peace among his supporters and urged unity and stability in the country.
