Italian Author Roberto Saviano Attends Frankfurt Book Fair Despite Controversy

Popular Italian author and critic Roberto Saviano is making waves at the Frankfurt Book Fair following a special invitation from German organizers. Known for his exposes on the Mafia in books like “Gomorrah,” Saviano has also been vocal about his criticism of Italy’s far-right government.

A recent spat with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni landed Saviano in hot water, resulting in a hefty fine. Despite this, his absence from the list of Italian authors invited to the fair sparked outrage among his peers, who accused the government of censorship and interference in cultural spaces.

While the head of the Italian Publishers Association claimed Saviano’s exclusion was an oversight, many saw it as a deliberate snub. Even Germany’s writers association PEN Berlin weighed in, highlighting the significance of Saviano’s work.

Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli and Hesse Premier Boris Rhein have both voiced support for Saviano, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding democratic values against indifference and censorship.
