Italy blocks arms deal with Israel over Gaza

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced in the Senate that the government has halted all new arms deals with Israel following the start of the war in Gaza. She emphasized that Italy’s arms agreements with Israel have stricter conditions compared to other Western countries.

Meloni stated that all new export licenses were suspended and agreements signed after October 7 were not implemented. Existing licenses are being reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This decision is more restrictive than the approaches taken by France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Amid Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza, the situation has led to devastating consequences, with over 42,400 people killed, mostly women and children, and more than 99,100 injured. The blockade has resulted in severe shortages of basic necessities like food, clean water, and medicine, leading to mass displacement of Gaza’s population.

Furthermore, Israel is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza. This development underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for international attention and action.
