Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud Party is stirring controversy with a conference aimed at promoting the re-establishment of Israeli settlements in Gaza, despite previous denials. With the slogan ‘Gaza is Ours, Forever’, the event is titled ‘Preparing to Resettle Gaza’ and is supported by key ministers and lawmakers from the right-wing party.
Organized by Social Equality Minister May Golan and the Nachala movement, known for creating illegal outposts, the conference aims to turn the idea of settling in Gaza into a practical reality. Far-right ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir, Bezalel Smotrich, Amichai Eliyahu, and Yitzhak Wasserlauf, along with other Likud MKs, are expected to attend.
The push for settlements in Gaza is met with international criticism as it violates international law. Israel had withdrawn from Gaza in 2005 after a 38-year occupation, but renewed settlement efforts could escalate tensions in the region. The conference is reminiscent of past calls for settlements in Gaza, demonstrating the ongoing political complexity in the region.
