The International Mechanism for International Criminal Courts (IMCC) has refused the request of Sredoje Lukić, who was convicted of war crimes in Višegrad, for early release after serving two-thirds of his sentence. The decision, made by Mechanism president Graciela Gatti Santana, cited the seriousness of his crimes and lack of rehabilitation as reasons for denial.
Despite being eligible for early release, Lukić’s request was rejected due to his failure to accept responsibility for the crimes he was convicted of. The judges highlighted his vague attitude towards the crimes during interviews with professionals as a significant deficiency in accepting full responsibility.
In 2012, Sredoje Lukić was sentenced to 27 years in prison by the Appeals Chamber of the Hague Tribunal for crimes against humanity and aiding in the atrocities committed in Višegrad. His refusal to acknowledge his actions and lack of remorse were key factors in the decision to deny his request for early release.
Lukić is currently serving his sentence in Norway, with no indication of his release in the near future.
