Trump Gains Unusual Support from Muslim Mayor in Michigan
Last month, Donald Trump secured the backing of Amer Ghalib, the Yemeni-born mayor of Hamtramck, the sole U.S. city with a Muslim-majority city council. Despite Trump’s previous actions like implementing a Muslim ban, Ghalib’s endorsement highlighted a strategic move by the two men aligned on certain conservative issues.
Following the endorsement, Trump intensified his campaign efforts in Michigan. With Republican PACs investing heavily in the state, highlighting Kamala Harris’ stance on Israel, polls now show Trump leading in Michigan.
While some Arab and Muslim communities in Michigan are turning away from Harris due to the Biden administration’s support for Israel’s actions, there are also groups voicing support for her, albeit reluctantly. The upcoming election in Michigan remains unpredictable with a motivated Republican campaign and a demoralized Democratic base.
As the race tightens, the choice Michigan makes will have a significant impact on the presidential election. The Arab and Muslim voters may hold the key to the outcome.
