Cuba’s Energy Crisis: Millions Face Blackouts as Government Halts Non-Vital Services

Cuba is currently grappling with a severe energy crisis, leading to marathon blackouts for a large portion of the population. Prime Minister Manuel Marrero announced that all non-vital state services and businesses will be halted for three days to combat the crisis.

The measures include the closure of cultural activities, recreation centers, and public schools until Monday. Marrero attributed the energy shortfall to a combination of deteriorating infrastructure, fuel shortages, and increasing demand.

President Miguel Diaz-Canel pointed to US sanctions as a factor exacerbating the crisis, as Cuba has historically relied on Venezuelan oil, which is now in short supply due to Venezuela’s economic troubles. With energy shortages plaguing the nation, Cuba is on the brink but not yet at a point of no return, reassured Marrero.

Dramatic Power Outages

Millions of Cubans are experiencing extended blackouts lasting up to 12 hours, with some areas without electricity for over 18 hours a day. The recent passage of Hurricane Milton further impeded fuel deliveries to power plants, aggravating the situation.

The ongoing maintenance of key power plants, coupled with the depletion of fuel for floating Turkish power ships, has worsened the crisis. Authorities anticipate improvements in power generation with the distribution of fuel across the island.

Rising Costs for Businesses

Private businesses in Cuba will soon face increased electricity rates due to their high consumption levels. As the electricity crisis compounds existing shortages of essential resources like food, fuel, and water, residents are enduring heightened challenges.

Furthermore, a growing concern over violent crime linked to a new drug, “quimico,” is emerging in the country. Despite the adversities, Cuba is striving to navigate through the crisis and revitalize its infrastructure for a more sustainable future.
