Committee Report Recommends Measures to Curb Spread of Fake News on Social Media
A high-level committee investigating the Lahore private college incident has finalized its report, suggesting actions to combat the dissemination of false information on social media. The committee, composed of key governmental officials, highlighted the importance of educating students on discerning between positive and negative content.
The report emphasized the necessity of implementing effective measures to combat hate speech and misinformation online. It also called for a deeper probe into alleged instances of fake social media accounts and hate speech. The committee stressed the significance of responsible social media usage and heightened surveillance to prevent similar incidents.
Earlier, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) took action against 20 individuals, including journalists and social media activists, for spreading false information about a Lahore college ‘rape’ case. The college Principal lodged a complaint stating that the accused parties tarnished the institution’s reputation with baseless allegations.
In response to the rumors, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz refuted the claims, denouncing them as a fabricated ploy to incite unrest and discredit the government. She accused rival political parties of exploiting the situation for personal gain.
