Labour Party Official Supports Harris Campaign, Raises Legal Concerns
Recent reports reveal that a top official from the Labour Party is assisting in organizing around 100 current and former Labour staffers to canvass for Harris in key battleground states. Despite the absence of involvement from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer or his government, an election lawyer cautioned that the volunteers risk violating election laws in the U.S., potentially resulting in sanctions against the Harris campaign.
Under federal law, travel expenses exceeding $1,000 for volunteers are considered donations. The steep costs of transportation in battleground states like Nevada, including plane tickets and car rentals, could pose legal challenges for the Harris campaign. The involvement of foreign citizens in U.S. election campaigns is permitted if travel expenses are under $1,000.
The news initially surfaced through a LinkedIn post by Sofia Patel, Labour’s head of operations, inviting staffers to volunteer for Harris. However, Patel’s post has been removed, and inquiries to Labour Party and Patel have not yielded responses.
Concerns and criticisms have been raised by figures like Nigel Farage and Trump allies, emphasizing the potential interference in U.S. elections. This episode follows earlier interactions between Labour and the Harris campaign, highlighting a broader involvement of foreign political operations in the 2024 election.
