US Bombs Houthi Weapons Storage Facilities in Yemen

The US has conducted airstrikes on five targets in parts of Yemen controlled by the Houthi militant group, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed. These strikes, carried out by B-2 Spirit long-range bombers, were aimed at underground weapons storage sites belonging to the Houthis.

The Houthi group, which has been targeting commercial ships passing through the Red Sea since last November, believes these vessels are linked to Israel. In response, the US launched Operation Prosperity Guardian against the Houthis in December. Defense Secretary Austin described the recent bombing raid as a “unique demonstration of the United States’ ability to target facilities that our adversaries seek to keep out of reach.”

Yemeni media reported that the strikes took place near the capital, Sanaa, and the Houthi stronghold of Saada. The Biden administration has reaffirmed its military support for Israel but has expressed concerns over civilian casualties and the disruption of humanitarian relief in Gaza. Recent threats to halt arms deliveries to Israel unless humanitarian conditions improve have underscored Washington’s unease over the situation.
