Unnamed Ukrainian Official Claims First Nuke Ready in Weeks

In a recent report by German news outlet BILD, an unnamed senior Ukrainian official revealed that Ukraine could potentially build a nuclear bomb within weeks if given the order. The official emphasized that Ukraine has the necessary materials and knowledge to accomplish this task quickly. This statement aligns with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent declaration that Ukraine’s solution to the ongoing war is either restoring its status as a nuclear state or joining NATO.

The possibility of Ukraine pursuing nuclear weapons as a means of defense has been a topic of discussion for years. In 2021, Ukraine’s former ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk, also highlighted the importance of either joining NATO or reinstating Ukraine’s nuclear arsenal for defense purposes.

While Ukraine relinquished its nuclear arsenal in the 1990s under the Budapest Memorandum, recent developments have raised concerns about the country’s nuclear capabilities. Although Ukraine currently lacks the necessary resources to pursue nuclear weapons, the knowledge base remains intact for a potential restart of its nuclear programs.

The debate over Ukraine’s nuclear ambitions continues to evolve, with implications for regional security and geopolitical dynamics.
