They emphasized that 97 percent of the population is facing severe hunger, marking the largest modern famine in Sudan’s history. The conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has resulted in countless casualties, with war crimes and obstruction of aid delivery rampant. The experts called for an immediate halt to the obstruction of aid and labeled the deliberate use of starvation as crimes against humanity and war crimes. The situation is so critical that famine has been declared in the Zamzam displacement camp, with other camps at risk as well. The lack of aid reaching these areas, combined with severe flooding and agricultural loss, has exacerbated the crisis.
The experts stressed the urgent need for international funding to support Sudan’s humanitarian response plan, as the current funding falls short of meeting the population’s needs.
