Britain has escalated its sanctions on Russian oil tankers and liquefied natural gas vessels, targeting 18 more ships in the country’s shadow fleet. These vessels are accused of using illicit practices to evade Western restrictions on Russian oil exports. This move is the largest batch of sanctions to date.
The new sanctions mean the 18 oil tankers are now prohibited from entering UK ports and utilizing British maritime services. This brings the total number of sanctioned Russian oil tankers to 43. Some of the vessels on the list are NS Bora, Atlas, and Moskovsky Prospect.
In response to this, the British government is collaborating with maritime authorities to compel Russian vessels with questionable insurance to disclose their insurance status as they traverse the English Channel.
The government has warned that any entity aiding Russia’s malicious activities could also face sanctions. Russia, on the other hand, refuses to bow to Western pressure regarding its oil exports, resulting in an increase in tankers transporting uninsured cargoes. The situation highlights the ongoing tensions between Russia and Western nations.
