Turkmenistan seeks SCO partnership for TAPI project

Turkmenistan is focusing on enhancing its collaboration with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in key areas of cooperation, particularly with the implementation of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) pipeline project. During a delegation visit to Pakistan led by Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov for the SCO Council of Heads of Government meeting, Turkmenistan highlighted the potential to strengthen relations with the SCO in transportation, energy, trade, and investment.

The spotlight was on joint infrastructure projects to enhance cooperation with SCO members and partners, with a key focus on the TAPI project as a crucial initiative for energy security in the region. TAPI, a significant project aimed at transporting natural gas from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan and Pakistan to India, began construction in Turkmenistan in 2015 to supply 33 bcm of gas annually.

As a major gas supplier, Turkmenistan plays a vital role in diversifying energy export routes and reinforcing regional economic ties through the development of the TAPI pipeline.
