ECOWAS Faces Possible Disintegration: The Urgent Need for Reunification
The recent decision by Burkina Faso to launch a new biometric passport without the ECOWAS logo raises concerns about the irreversibility of their withdrawal from the regional bloc. The establishment of the Alliance of Sahel States by Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali further complicates the situation. Challenges to multilateralism and development arise as these countries move away from ECOWAS.
The root of the crisis lies in military coups and political instability in the region. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s experience in conflict resolution and his diplomatic networks position him as a key player in reuniting ECOWAS. Collaborating with current ECOWAS Chair, President Bola Tinubu, may offer a chance to salvage the regional organization.
As geopolitical tensions rise with Russia and China’s influence in the region, the need for a unified ECOWAS becomes more pressing. Obasanjo’s track record in resolving conflicts and Tinubu’s political experience make them ideal candidates to lead the reunification efforts. Time is running out, and the future of ECOWAS rests on their ability to work together towards a common goal.
