Tanzania Dismisses Human Rights Watch Report, Calls Allegations Exaggerated
Tanzania has rejected the latest Human Rights Watch report, labeling it as exaggerated and lacking credibility. The report highlighted various human rights abuses in the country ahead of local government elections, urging Tanzanian authorities to address the deteriorating situation.
Despite HRW’s concerns over arrests, abductions, and killings of government critics, Tanzanian Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Prof Palamagamba Kabudi defended the government’s actions, stating that the human rights situation in the country is not as dire as portrayed.
However, HRW stressed the need for urgent action to curb repression and violations of freedom of expression and association. The international rights watchdog cited arbitrary arrests of opposition supporters, restrictions on social media, and attacks on independent media as alarming trends reminiscent of the 2020 general election climate.
In response to media clampdown claims, Prof Kabudi maintained that the government’s actions were in line with existing laws and regulations. Despite the ongoing debate, it is crucial for all stakeholders to analyze the situation responsibly and address any shortcomings constructively.
