A recent study highlighted the importance of improving mangrove cover along the coastlines to protect from erosion and floods. Mangroves have decreased drastically over the years due to human activities, but efforts to revive them are showing positive results, especially in Karnataka.
The government’s mangrove initiative scheme aims to target 7580.70 hectares across nine states, including 240 hectares in Karnataka for intervention in 2023-24. Monitoring and funding are crucial for the success of such nature-based solutions (NbS). Currently, 94% of the funding for NbS in India comes from government sources, but there is a need for public-private partnerships and financial risk mitigation strategies to encourage private sector investment.
The study also emphasized the importance of site-specific frameworks and public awareness in implementing NbS effectively. Indu K Murthy, one of the authors, stressed the need to quantify the effectiveness of NbS to raise awareness about their significance in mitigation and adaptation measures.
Overall, the research provides valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders to focus on preserving and enhancing mangrove ecosystems for sustainable coastal protection.
