Rumbek University students threatened to protest amid staff strike.

The guild president of Rumbek University of Science and Technology (RUST) expressed concern over a staff strike and lack of food, disrupting student studies. The strike was initiated due to the government’s failure to pay 10 months’ salary arrears, affecting both academic and non-academic staff. Guild President Sebit Job Reec called on the National Minister of Higher Education to urgently address the situation to ensure staff payment and food supply for students.

In a letter, Job highlighted the challenges faced by students and staff, emphasizing the need for prompt action. The lack of payment for lecturers led to a shortage of teachers and disrupted classes, while the food supplier stopped deliveries due to non-payment. Students threatened peaceful demonstrations if the issues were not resolved within seven days.

The non-academic staff association also expressed their grievances and declared an open-ended strike until their demands were met by the government. With no services available, the university faced further disruptions. The situation called for immediate attention to prevent further escalation of the crisis.
