US Forces Not Directly Involved in Killing of Hamas Leader, Pentagon Says
According to the Pentagon, the US forces were “not directly involved” in the operation that led to the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar by Israel. Press Secretary Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder clarified that it was an Israeli operation and US forces played no direct role.
Ryder highlighted the assistance provided by a small number of special operations forces in advising Israel on hostage recovery efforts. The killing of Sinwar is considered a significant counterterrorism achievement.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant to discuss the reports on Sinwar’s death. At the time of their conversation, the Israeli army was still confirming the news.
Sinwar, who took over as Hamas’ political chief in August, was succeeded Ismail Haniyeh. Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran after attending Iran’s president’s swearing-in ceremony.
