The prestigious University of Oxford is set to appoint a new chancellor, with 38 candidates in contention for the ceremonial post. Notably absent from the list is former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated. The candidates, including high-profile figures like William Hague and Peter Mandelson, are vying to succeed former Hong Kong governor Chris Patten.
Among the candidates is Scottish lawyer Elish Angiolini, who led an inquiry into a high-profile case in London. Imran Khan, an Oxford alumni, spent time in prison on politically motivated charges and had expressed interest in the position. However, the university cited “exclusion criteria” in disqualifying him from the race.
The new chancellor, to be announced in late November, will hold the position for a maximum of 10 years. This highly anticipated decision comes after rounds of voting and will shape the direction of the prestigious institution for years to come.
