Wind Farms and Golden Eagles: Environmental Impact Assessment
The Ministry of the Environment has chosen not to release a report detailing the negative effects of wind farms on golden eagles, as reported by Helsingin Sanomat. The report, commissioned by the ministry itself, concluded that certain wind farms encroached on golden eagle habitats and should not have been constructed.
Another report examining the impact of offshore wind farms on seabirds was also suppressed by the ministry, despite being completed with feedback from stakeholders. These reports were intended to assist local authorities in balancing wind farm development with wildlife conservation. Experts at ELY Centres largely supported the reports, emphasizing the importance of addressing growing wind energy projects.
The decision not to publish the reports, influenced by stakeholders such as Renewables Finland and Juha Niemelä of Metsähallitus, raises concerns about the prioritization of climate goals over wildlife conservation. Minister Kai Mykkänen of the National Coalition Party has denied involvement in this decision.
