A man in Florida has been charged with aggravated animal cruelty after leaving his dog tied to a post in floodwaters ahead of Hurricane Milton. The dog, now renamed Trooper, was rescued by Highway Patrol and footage of the rescue has been viewed over 12 million times. The man, Giovanny Aldama Garcia, claimed he abandoned the dog because he was leaving Florida due to the storm and could not find anyone to care for him. If found guilty, Garcia could face up to five years in jail for animal cruelty.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis condemned Garcia’s actions, calling them “totally unacceptable”. The dog, now safe and in foster care, has touched the hearts of many and will soon be adopted. Hurricane Milton caused widespread devastation in Florida, resulting in at least 24 deaths. Despite the tragedy, the story of Trooper serves as a reminder of the resilience and compassion in the face of disaster. The Leon County Humane Society has received an outpouring of support for Trooper, proving that even in the darkest of times, there is light and hope for a better future.
