Kenya DP Gachagua impeachment trial ends today

The Senate is in the midst of the impeachment trial of Kenya’s Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, facing charges including corruption and ethnic incitement. After the National Assembly voted to impeach Gachagua, the Senate took over the proceedings. Gachagua pleaded not guilty to the charges read aloud in the Senate chamber.

For the impeachment to be upheld, a two-thirds majority of the 67-member Senate must vote in favor. If found guilty, Gachagua will be disqualified from holding public office. The Senate is set to debate the motion on Thursday before voting on it, with a possible extension of proceedings to Friday.

In the event of impeachment, Gachagua is likely to challenge the decision in court. The outcome of the trial will have significant implications for Kenya’s political landscape and the future of Gachagua’s career. Stay tuned as the Senate wraps up the impeachment trial against the Deputy President.
