Corruption in Judiciary: A Threat to Nigeria’s Democracy and Unity
The Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) Resource Centre has sounded the alarm on the corrupt practices within Nigeria’s judiciary, stating that they pose a serious threat to the nation’s democracy and unity. At the 37th Anti-Corruption Situation Room (ACSR) in Uyo, the Chairman of HEDA, Mr. Olanrewaju Suraju, emphasized the detrimental impact of corruption on the integrity, accountability, and transparency of the judicial process.
Suraju highlighted the alarming findings from the National Bureau of Statistics’ 2024 Corruption Survey, which revealed significant bribes paid to judicial officers, compromising the judiciary’s critical role in upholding stability and protecting citizens. With a focus on addressing corruption in the judiciary, stakeholders convened to develop actionable solutions to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy and unity.
The event, supported by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, aims to present evidence-based recommendations to the Chief Justice of Nigeria for implementation. By uniting efforts to combat corruption in the judiciary, stakeholders are championing transparency, accountability, integrity, and ethics in upholding justice as the “last hope of the common man.”
