Innovative Industrial Drones to Combat Landmines in Ukraine
A Japanese company, Prodrone, is revolutionizing the fight against landmines in Ukraine with its cutting-edge industrial drones. In collaboration with the Tokyo consulting agency Padeco, Prodrone aims to commercialize this project by 2025. These geodesic drones, flying at a mere 50 centimeters above ground, are equipped with advanced detectors to precisely locate landmines and other explosives. The use of AI technology streamlines the identification process, sending the coordinates of the objects to Ukrainian authorities for safe removal.
With over 600 civilian casualties in Ukraine due to landmines and ERW, this initiative is crucial. Prodrone is currently seeking a $400,000 grant from the UNIDO to kickstart a pilot program, with hopes of expanding to a full-scale operation by 2025. This ambitious project is set to employ up to 1,000 drones, making it the largest of its kind in the country.
Prodrone’s CEO, Shunsuke Toya, envisions not only a safer environment in Ukraine but also economic growth through the export of drone technology. By utilizing their expertise in ultra-low-altitude flights, Prodrone is at the forefront of using drones for humanitarian purposes on a large scale.
