Israel’s Interest in Somaliland Relations

Israel’s Interest in Somaliland Relations

Israel Eyes Military Base in Northern Somalia to Monitor Yemen and Bab al-Mandab

Israel is reportedly considering the establishment of a military base in northern Somalia to supervise Yemen and the crucial Bab al-Mandab Strait, as per Middle East Monitor. In return, Israel would forge relationships with Somaliland, a region controlling northern Somalia but unrecognized by Israel.

Strategically located, Somaliland borders key nations and could play a vital role in securing the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Red Sea from piracy and terrorism. International shipping companies are seeking alternative routes due to unrest in the area, affecting global trade.

Securing Israel and Exploring Economic Opportunities

Israel aims to bolster its national security remotely and counter threats like the Houthi presence in Yemen. The potential economic benefits of diplomacy, such as investments in agriculture, energy, and infrastructure, are also enticing.

The UAE, with ties to both Israel and Somaliland, has a base in the region since 2017. It is believed to be facilitating Israel’s quest for a military base in Somaliland.
