Hong Kong is set to launch a call for proposals from universities vying to operate the city’s third medical school by the end of the year. A panel comprised of industry leaders will be responsible for selecting the operator for the new institution.
The panel, established on Thursday, will determine the framework for establishing the medical school and engage with interested universities. Education minister Christine Choi Yuk-lin and health secretary Lo Chung-mau will co-chair the panel, with expert advisors including former Chinese University president Professor Joseph Sung Jao-yiu and Chinese Medical Association president Professor Zhao Yupei.
Tertiary institutions will be invited to submit formal proposals, with the government aiming to select a suitable university for the development of the third medical school by the end of the year.
Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu announced the formation of the panel in his recent policy address. The new medical school and integrated teaching hospital will be located in Ngau Tam Mei as part of the Northern Metropolis development project in Yuen Long.
