Questions have been raised about a recent police blitz in the Durban CBD, where 15 undocumented foreigners were arrested and 100 homeless people were removed from the streets. The operation, aimed at creating a “safer festive season”, targeted the Albert Park area known for crimes like theft and robberies.
The Denis Hurley Centre expressed concern over the raid, acknowledging the intention to address criminal elements but highlighting the creation of new problems. Dr. Raymond Perrier, director of the center, emphasized the need for thoughtful interventions rather than just reacting to visible issues.
While 15 undocumented foreigners and 100 homeless individuals were processed after Monday’s raid, the wider impact on other affected groups was noted. The dispersal of these groups often leads to them relocating rather than disappearing, causing challenges in different areas of the city.
