China urges for boosting UNSC resolutions on Gaza for greater impact

In a recent emergency United Nations Security Council meeting on the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, China’s permanent representative to the UN, Fu Cong, emphasized the need to uphold and revitalize the effectiveness of UNSC resolutions. Despite multiple resolutions calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, none have been effectively implemented, damaging the credibility of the UN system.

Fu urged all states to adhere to and implement Council resolutions, emphasizing the responsibility of every member to safeguard their effectiveness. He specifically called on the United States to support further actions by the Council for an immediate ceasefire, questioning the large-scale military aid provided to Israel.

Furthermore, Fu stressed the importance of upholding international humanitarian law and criticized the use of starvation as a weapon of war. He called on Israel to lift the blockade and restrictions on humanitarian access in Gaza, cooperate with the UN and humanitarian entities, and ensure the safety of humanitarian operations.

China firmly opposes any suppression or smearing of UNRWA, the UN relief agency for Palestinians, which plays a crucial role in providing humanitarian assistance in Gaza. Overall, Fu’s statements underscored the urgent need for concrete actions to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and ensure the effectiveness of UNSC resolutions.
