Australia has confirmed a substantial aid package for Ukraine, gifting 49 M1A1 Abrams tanks to support the country in its fight against Russia. This donation marks the largest allocation of tanks by a donor country since the invasion began. The tanks, which are subject to US regulations, will provide increased firepower and mobility to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The decision was formally announced by Australian Defense Industry Minister Pat Conroy at a NATO meeting in Brussels.
The move comes after a year-long campaign by Ukraine’s Ambassador to Australia and the Ukrainian Australian diaspora, highlighting the increasing assaults by Russian forces on Ukraine. The equipment, due to be retired by Australia in 2025, will be replaced with upgraded tanks, making them superior to those operated by Russian forces. This contribution brings Australia’s military and humanitarian support for Ukraine to $1 billion USD.
The decision has been met with gratitude and relief by the Ukrainian Australian diaspora, emphasizing the critical role of ongoing international support for Ukraine’s defense. The tanks are expected to undergo repairs and upgrades before being delivered, potentially enhancing Ukraine’s capabilities on the battlefield.
