Government Reaches Agreement on Permanent Constitutional Bench in Supreme Court

The government has finalized plans for the formation of a permanent constitutional bench in the Supreme Court, according to sources. The bench will consist of seven judges who cannot be removed, ensuring a stable judiciary for handling constitutional matters and other cases. The Judiciary Commission will have the authority to appoint these permanent judges, creating a structured selection process.

Furthermore, discussions are underway to abolish the Supreme Court’s involvement in electing members of the Chief Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). In case of disagreement, the Supreme Judicial Council will make the final decision, with the council’s majority ruling being binding. The government is also considering allowing overseas Pakistanis to contest elections, with the condition of renouncing dual citizenship within three months if elected. Additionally, overseas Pakistanis present in the country during elections will be given the opportunity to cast their votes, as confirmed by sources.
