Who is Samidoun, the banned Palestinian group in Canada and the US?

US and Canada Designate Samidoun as a “Terrorist Entity” Linked to PFLP

A recent photo captured a flag of the pro-Palestine organization ‘Samidoun’ during a demonstration in Duisburg, Germany. The United States and Canada have jointly classified Samidoun, a Palestinian prisoner support group, as a “terrorist entity” due to its alleged ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

The US Department of the Treasury accused Samidoun of fundraising for the PFLP, which was supported by Canada’s Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc. Germany and the Netherlands have also recently taken actions against Samidoun.

Treasury official Bradley T. Smith emphasized that organizations like Samidoun divert funds meant for humanitarian aid to support terrorist groups. Samidoun, on the other hand, describes itself as an international network that supports Palestinian prisoners in their quest for freedom and strives to raise awareness about their conditions and demands.

Despite facing scrutiny and pressure from pro-Israel organizations, Samidoun remains committed to its mission of advocating for Palestinian rights and ending Israel’s occupation and violence in Gaza. The recent designations by the US and Canada pose significant challenges for Palestinian advocacy and civil society groups, with fears of broader suppression and criminalization of Palestinian activism in Western nations.
