United States Urges India to Take Canadian Allegations of Assassination Plot Seriously

The United States intervened in the diplomatic dispute between Canada and India, emphasizing the seriousness of the allegations made by Canada regarding an assassination plot. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stated that India needs to cooperate with Canada in the investigation of the matter.

Despite being key partners of the United States, India and Canada expelled each other’s diplomats due to Canadian claims that Indian government agents were involved in violent activities against Sikh separatists on Canadian soil. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau criticized India’s response to the situation.

The US’s concerns stem from similar claims made by Washington about a failed assassination plot by India on US soil. India has assured the US of ongoing investigations and cooperation in resolving the case. Despite the tension, Canadian and Indian officials have stated that there has been no immediate negative impact on bilateral trade ties between the two countries.

Canadian Sikh Leaders Speak Out

Canadian Sikh leaders, including Jagmeet Singh, have accused India of hiring hitmen and engaging criminal elements in Canada to commit violence. Singh called for sanctions against Indian diplomats linked to extremist groups. Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a Sikh separatist targeted for assassination, accused the Indian government of trying to hire hitmen within the Sikh community.
