US plunges into war to reshape Lebanon’s power balance

The Biden administration, after failing to secure a ceasefire in Lebanon, has turned to Israel’s military to shift the balance of power against Hezbollah. The move indicates a concession that American diplomacy couldn’t prevent a full-scale conflict.

The US had long watched Hezbollah dominate Lebanon, prompting a violent history, including the 2006 war. Despite attempted ceasefires and resolutions, Hezbollah continued to grow with Iran’s support, solidifying its grip.

With an aim to break Hezbollah’s control, the US supported Israel in its recent offensive. Targeting Hezbollah’s arsenal, Israel claimed significant victories but also caused significant devastation in Lebanon.

The political landscape in Lebanon remains unstable, with efforts to elect a pro-Western president amid Hezbollah’s influence. The US aims to unify the country against Hezbollah, but the path to peace is uncertain.

As Lebanon faces a potential civil war, the outcome may now rely on military actions rather than diplomatic negotiations.
