The U.S. has taken action against individuals and firms involved in a Lebanon-based sanctions evasion network that aided Hezbollah by generating millions in revenue. Additionally, sanctions were imposed on individuals trafficking Captagon, an amphetamine, from Lebanon into Jordan.
Most Captagon production occurs in Syria with some in Lebanon, leading to illegal trade worth billions for senior Syrian government officials. These penalties aim to prevent these entities from using the U.S. financial system and restrict interaction with American citizens.
Treasury’s Acting Under Secretary Bradley T. Smith highlighted Hezbollah’s destabilizing impact in Lebanon and beyond. The State Department reiterated the U.S.’s commitment to combatting the illicit Captagon trade in the region.
