The White House expressed concern over reports of North Korean soldiers fighting for Russia in Ukraine, following accusations made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The Kremlin has denied these allegations as “fake news.”
If true, the involvement of North Korean troops in Ukraine would signify a significant escalation in the North Korea-Russia defense relationship, according to White House National Security Council spokesperson Sean Savett. This development could indicate Russia’s desperation as it faces heavy casualties in its war against Ukraine.
Despite denials of arms transfers, Washington claims North Korea has provided Russia with ballistic missiles and ammunition, with both countries pledging to strengthen military cooperation. General Charles Flynn, of the U.S. Army’s Indo-Pacific Command, highlighted the risk of North Korea gaining real-time feedback on its weaponry from the conflict in Ukraine.
In June, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a treaty including a mutual assistance clause for repelling external aggression. This situation raises concerns about the potential consequences of North Korean involvement in the conflict.
