UNMISS report: Subnational violence against civilians in South Sudan a major concern

UNMISS Report Highlights Subnational Violence in South Sudan

The latest quarterly brief from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) reveals the ongoing concern of subnational violence impacting civilians throughout the country. Between April and June 2024, UNMISS documented 317 incidents affecting over 1,000 civilians, with a significant increase compared to previous years.

Of particular concern are the rising numbers of abductions and sexual violence, with a substantial increase in victims compared to the previous quarter. Women and girls remain disproportionately affected by conflict-related sexual violence, highlighting the urgent need for protection measures.

Most incidents were attributed to community-based militias and civil defense groups, fueled by border disputes and ethnic tensions. While Western Equatoria State had the highest number of incidents, Warrap State saw the most significant impact on civilian victims.

UNMISS calls on the South Sudanese government to take action to prevent further violence, investigate human rights abuses, and hold perpetrators accountable. It emphasizes the importance of dialogue and reconciliation to address underlying conflict drivers and promote lasting peace.
