The “General’s Plan” proposed by retired General Giora Eiland aims to expel Palestinians from the area and subject those who remain to forced starvation and military targeting. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is considering implementing this controversial plan in hopes of declaring victory after a year of unmet objectives in the war with Hamas.
The strategic importance of controlling northern Gaza lies in separating Gaza City, a major social services center, from the rest of the territory and securing Israel’s southern border. The ongoing Israeli military actions have resulted in the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, with plans to further intensify efforts to push them out of the region.
However, sustaining such operations in Gaza long term remains doubtful due to internal and external pressures from Arab countries, Europe, and the United States.
