UN Peacekeeping Outpost in Southern Lebanon Attacked by Israeli Tank
A United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) observation post in southern Lebanon was damaged when an Israeli Merkava tank fired upon it, destroying surveillance equipment and a watchtower. UNIFIL has condemned the attack, labeling it as a deliberate act by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and urging respect for UN premises.
This incident is part of a series of alleged intentional attacks by the IDF on UN positions in southern Lebanon amid escalating tensions with the Hezbollah militant group. Several peacekeepers have been injured, and UN installations have suffered damage as a result of these attacks.
Initially established in 1978, UNIFIL monitors the withdrawal of Israeli forces below the Blue Line separating Lebanon from Israel and the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights. With around 10,000 troops from 50 nations, the contingent’s role includes preventing military presence in the area between the Blue Line and the Litani River.
Despite calls from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to evacuate southern Lebanon, UNIFIL has remained steadfast in its refusal to withdraw, citing its mission to maintain peace in the region.
